MOG Reviews NoLay – He Said, She Said I Am Bad

Female rapper/grime mc  No Lay brings us a selection of six new songs fresh off her latest promo named “He said, she said, I am bad”. The first song, “Clock face” is a mixture of grime and electro, but definitely not in a soft ‘pop’ way, think Akala’s “Electro livin” and similarities can be drawn. Lyrically No Lay matches the beat with a flow based on metaphors which feature lines such as “I’m a stroppy little madam, have them hiding out like Sadam, what we tell them stop the babbling I don’t want to hear it”. What is striking so early on is her lyrical ability and general ability as an MC which puts her in the top brackets of female rappers.

Song two, “Drugs” again brings an unconventional, yet successful instrumental which again is grimy more than any other genre. Here No Lay uses the drug theme in relation to herself, claiming “My flow’s heroin, you can’t give up on me – please cold turkey, my flow’s levelin”. Again, it is her flow combined with witty visuals which will please listeners. On a lyrical level, she can be compared to the likes of Wretch 32 and Ice kid, who excel with layers of wordplay.

Next is “It’s a lie”, and No Lay spits over another experimental, yet gritty beat – this time produced by Silkie. Once more, she should not be underestimated here and continues to excel at rhyming. So far, “It’s a lie” contributes to what is already a strong line up of songs, with no real faults between them.

This is followed up by “Do it” the first real hip-hop song of the promo. With lyrics such as “Straight out of the gutter blocks, chilling in the Gucci spots, badding up the girl’s that’s posh” No Lay further stakes her claim as one of the better female MC’s and comparisons to US act Nicki Minaj can be seen on an artistic level, who also shares a quick flow with plenty of clever rhymes thrown in.

Song five, which shares the title of the promo “He said, she said I am bad” carries on the promo’s themes of success, rivalry and confidence. In fact, the songs title can sum up the entire promo, which is based on the above themes of success, rivalry and confidence. It is another good song which further justifies her claims of skill and talent.

Lastly, the promo ends with a remix of “Drugs”, aptly named “Drugs remix”. Surprisingly the likes of English Frank feature, who as usual, doesn’t fail to deliver with a great verse. “MDMA got me thinking naughty all day; I can’t get her out my mind my new drug in No Lay”. It is a great feature to what is generally a great promo which should leave the listeners with no doubt that No Lay is a top MC.

Final Thoughts: “He said, she said I’m bad” is a solid release which digs deep into the talent of No Lay. Lyrically, as mentioned throughout she is clearly talented and knows how to make good songs, and there are plenty on this six-strong release. However, if there is one problem, it is her lack of themes and concepts within her content. The likes of “Drugs” do make up for this, but it would have been nice to hear more emotion and story telling at times. Overall, this is a good promo which proves No Lay is much, much more than a gimmick as a female MC and has enough on there to entertain.

Score: 8.5

Best Song: Drugs

Best line: “Straight out of the gutter blocks, chilling in the Gucci spots, badding up the girl’s that’s posh”
